Message from the Director
Cultivating a culture of safety takes dedication and active participation from every NDOT teammate, contractor, and consultant. It is an undelegated responsibility that should be the first consideration of every decision. From our commutes to and from work to the job sites we work on and all the tasks in between, it’s crucial that safety is the nexus of everything we do. Ultimately, at the end of the day, getting everyone home safely is my highest priority.
Much of the work NDOT teammates are responsible for involves risk. Whether you are flagging vehicles in head-to-head traffic, operating, or fixing equipment, plowing snow in the mightiest of Nebraska winters, cleaning debris from the roadway, or responding to crashes, I know you are constantly balancing the need to get the work done with keeping yourselves and others safe. Diligence over complacency must win when it comes to observing safety policies, practices, and procedures.
NDOT’s Safety Manual is a part of that safety culture – ensuring we don’t lose focus on the many hazards present in our workplaces and intentionally addressing those hazards through standards and procedures that are important in preventing injury.
We all have a responsibility to each other to maintain a safe work environment and conduct ourselves in a manner that promotes safety. I encourage you to utilize this manual as a tool in helping make those decisions. To make room for new concepts that are rooted in safety and to consider each implementation as an opportunity to make our Agency better.
Thank you, Vicki Kramer
